Salinas chief details delay in Bruhn fire report
“A roomful of Rotarians audibly gasped at times Tuesday as the Salinas fire chief revealed further details of the massive fire that claimed the historic Dick Bruhn building on Feb. 13, including why there was a significant delay in reporting the fire to authorities.
The exact cause of the fire has not been determined yet, but Salinas Fire Chief Ed Rodriguez said it appears to have been electrical in nature and began on the second floor. Arson was ruled out during initial investigation that included assistance from Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigators.”
In widely-shared security video footage from a business across the street from the Dick Bruhn building, a man can be seen exiting the building as smoke begins to pour out, and ranging public speculation ensued regarding the man’s involvement.
After the building’s owner Gerry Kehoe had done some unpermitted work on the building in the past, the city had red-tagged any further work on the building, and Kehoe said he was using for storage in the meantime.
