What did you think of the fireworks ban and did it help?
With fireworks being banned through the majority of the county, was it worth it?
According to a recent story by KSBW, nearly 800 reports of illegal fireworks were directed to the Salinas Fire Department on the Fourth of July. Yet, it was stated that it was “calmer” than past years. When you consider that over 14,000 people attended the Salinas Sports Complex fireworks show, it would make sense that a decrease in fire activity was seen.
“This year, we saw a decrease in calls regarding fire damage related to fireworks,” said Nicole Petitt, Business Development Manager at Property Restoration Services. “Notably, we noticed a major decrease in firework related calls from Salinas where fireworks were banned. This isn’t to say that we are out of the woods. We receive calls for a few weeks after the Fourth of July when people start to set-off left over fireworks or don’t store them properly.”
In Hollister, the debate over banning fireworks is underway after two fires started from alleged fireworks use. A report is being created by the Fire Chief in Hollister and will provide more information for the city to review.
“Because of the work we do, we have seen the damage that fireworks have created historically for homeowner’s and business owner’s alike. But, we also understand that responsible use is the key,” said Petitt. “It will be interesting to see how the fireworks ban moves forward and if other cities will join in.”
In Seaside, a two homes were engulfed in flames and said to NOT be related to fireworks. According to the Monterey Weekly, “According to Seaside Fire Battalion Chief Troy Leist, just before 10pm, fire crews from Seaside, Monterey and Presidio of Monterey were called to Westminster Court off Yosemite Street in response to a large fire that broke out between two homes.”
It was noted that “trunkfuls” of illegal fireworks were confiscated in Seaside after police patrolled the area near the fire.
